Swedish BIOGAS

Sasejo delivers biogas through bulk transport across Sweden.

WHAT IS BIOGAS AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

Biogas is a renewable energy source produced through the biological decomposition of organic material in a process known as anaerobic digestion. Feedstocks may include food waste, sewage sludge, manure and byproducts from the food industry.

The produced gas consists mainly of methane (CH₄), and carbon dioxide (CO₂), with methane being the energy carrying component. After purification and upgrading, during which carbon dioxide and impurities are removed, biomethane is obtained with a quality equivalent to fossil natural gas.

Biogas and biomethane can be used for:

  • Electricity and heat production
  • Vehicle fuel within the transport and maritime sectors
  • Industrial processes

VERY HIGH CLIMATE BENEFITS

Biogas reduces greenhouse gas emissions by replacing fossil fuels and by reducing methane leakage from organic waste and manure. Manure based biogas in particular can deliver very high climate benefits. Biogas is divided into three main categories based on feedstock.

Manure based

By capturing methane from manure and converting it into energy, emissions can be significantly reduced, in some cases close to zero or even negative. This makes it the most climate positive biogas feedstock solution.

Waste based

By treating food waste and other organic waste, is it possible to reduce waste volumes while producing renewable energy. This makes the solution particularly important in cities with large waste streams.

Byproduct based

By utilizing residual products from industries such as the food sector, resources that would otherwise be wasted can be converted into energy. This strengthens resource efficiency and contributes to a more circular economy.

CBG OR LBG?

CBG – Compressed biogas

CBG is best suited for vehicles operating short to medium distances, such as city buses, waste collection trucks and service vehicles.

CBG is a reliable energy source for small and medium sized industries where energy demand is continuous but often moderate.

LBG – Liquefied biogas

LBG is best suited for heavy duty vehicles operating over longer distances, both for cost efficiency and because it reduces the need for a large number of refueling stations.

LBG is a key energy source for heavy industry and is well suited where energy demand is high and continuous.
